Avram Grant secures work permit to take over as West Ham manager

• Israeli wins approval to take new role at Upton Park
• Grant signed four-year contract last week

West Ham have confirmed that Avram Grant has had his work permit application approved to allow him to become the club’s new manager.

The Israeli agreed a four-year contract last week to succeed Gianfranco Zola at Upton Park and was awaiting approval from the Home Office. That has now been secured and he can begin his new role on an official basis.

Co-chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold previously hailed the 55-year-old’s appointment as the “beginning of a new era”.

Speaking at the time of Grant signing his contract, Gold told the club’s website: “I have to say that having met Avram and spent some time with him, we have got our man. He is a perfect fit. We needed experience and stability. He’s a footballing man and quite frankly his reputation speaks for itself.”

West Ham expect to appoint Avram Grant next week

• Avram Grant set to be unveiled by West Ham on Wednesday
• Gianfranco Zola thought to be close to settlement over payoff

West Ham United are set to appoint Avram Grant as their new manager on Wednesday and the Premier League club hope to have agreed amicable settlements with Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke by the time the Israeli is unveiled at Upton Park next week.

Zola was deeply upset with the manner of his dismissal after he was accused of a breach of contract and the Italian decided to take legal action over his departure. The Premier League was due to set a date for an arbitration hearing over Zola’s payoff – he was earning £1.9m a year with three years of his contract to run but did not receive a settlement. However, it is understood that both parties are now close to reaching an agreement that will obviate the need for matters to be taken further. That development will come as a relief to West Ham, given the negative publicity that their actions risked.

Clarke’s exit was effectively rubberstamped when West Ham opted to turn to Grant as their new manager. The two worked together at Chelsea, following José Mourinho’s dismissal in 2007, but Grant is keen to bring in his own assistant manager, leaving Clarke to thrash out the terms of his payoff. Those discussions have now taken place and an agreement has been reached on how much Clarke, who was earning £1.2m a year, should receive as a settlement.

Grant is set to sign a three-year contract to replace Zola. His name had featured prominently on the original shortlist that David Sullivan and David Gold, West Ham’s co-owners, drew up in the wake of Zola’s sacking, and his resignation as manager of Portsmouth nine days ago paved the way for him to take over. Portsmouth have not demanded any compensation for Grant who led the club to the FA Cup final last season.

Portsmouth manager Avram Grant set for West Ham talks

• Israeli given permission to negotiate with London club
• West Ham also interested in Allardyce, Holloway and Jones

Portsmouth’s manager, Avram Grant, could leave the club just days after their FA Cup final defeat at Wembley after opening talks with West Ham United.

The London club, looking for a quick appointment after sacking Gianfranco Zola, were given permission to talk to the Israeli by Portsmouth’s administrator.

However, reports suggest any official contract offer to Grant may be delayed until after West Ham have also spoken to Blackburn Rovers’ Sam Allardyce, Blackpool’s Ian Holloway and Cardiff City’s Dave Jones. Holloway and Jones face each other in Saturday’s Championship play-off final.

Any deal for Grant could be complicated by issues around compensation, but with the Israeli having gone unpaid for several months due to Portsmouth’s financial plight, he believes he will be free to move without a fee being paid.
