West Ham make inquiry about Lorient striker Kevin Gameiro

• Avram Grant wants to sign a forward and a right-back
• Alessandro Diamanti expected to join Brescia today

Avram Grant is intent on signing a striker and right-back for West Ham United before the close of the transfer window next Tuesday and the club have made an inquiry to the French side Lorient about their forward, Kevin Gameiro.

Although a formal bid for the 23-year old Frenchman is yet to be confirmed, Grant should have some funds to buy and Alessandro Diamanti’s expected move from West Ham to Brescia is due to be completed today.

The Israeli manager is also expected to try to bring players to Upton Park through loan deals.

Grant considers adding a right-back to his squad as his main priority and he may attempt to sign Luke Young from Aston Villa or West Ham’s former central midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker, who can also play in that position.

West Ham’s Valon Behrami angles for return to Serie A with Roma

• Player says his partner has not adapted to London
• ‘There is interest in me from Roma but nothing concrete’

The West Ham United midfielder Valon Behrami is agitating for a move to the Serie A club Roma, claiming that his family cannot settle in London.

The 25-year-old Swiss moved from Lazio for £5m two years ago but his Italian partner Elena Bonzanni has not adapted to the move from Rome and the couple are struggling to bring up their baby daughter in the capital.

Behrami, who is contracted until 2013 at Upton Park, said: “There is interest in me from Roma but nothing concrete so far and so I am still at West Ham. I would have no problem playing for Roma despite being ex-Lazio. I am a professional.

“My daughter Sofia is now 18 months old and it is not easy to bring up a child in London. Besides, Elena does not have a big circle of friends over there.”

Meanwhile West Ham’s summer signing Thomas Hitzlsperger was ruled out for at least a month with a thigh injury sustained while playing for Germany against Denmark last week.

Chelsea complete Ramires signing after successful tribunal appeal

• Brazil midfielder signs from Benfica for £18.2m
• West Ham fail in application for Miralem Sulejmani

Chelsea have been given the go-ahead to complete the £18.2m transfer of the Brazil midfielder Ramires from Benfica after the player was granted a work permit at a tribunal today.

The clearance came this afternoon after the Chelsea assistant manager, Ray Wilkins, and the club secretary, Dave Barnard, attended a hearing in London and argued their case for Ramires to receive a permit under the special circumstances clause, given that he has not played the required 75% of games for Brazil over the past two years.

The panel sanctioned the signing of the 23-year-old widely recognised as one of the most sought-after young talents in the game. The Brazilian is expected to arrive in London tomorrow to complete the paperwork, although he is unlikely to be considered for Saturday’s visit of West Bromwich Albion to Stamford Bridge.

West Ham United will have to appeal after the Serbian forward Miralem Sulejmani, signed provisionally on loan from Ajax yesterday, saw his application rejected. The 21-year-old, who was not included in his country’s squad for this summer’s World Cup finals, had agreed a 12-month deal subject to being granted a work permit after spending two years at Ajax following a £13m move from Heerenveen.

Fulham were disappointed in their pursuit of the defender Slobodan Rajkovic, who spent three years with Chelsea on loan at PSV Eindhoven and FC Twente in Holland, and is now a free agent. Mark Hughes attended his hearing today but saw the 21-year-old’s work permit application rejected, with an appeal likely to follow.
